There is a national epidemic of diabetes. It affects at least 2% of the
population, and 5% of the population aged over 50 years. The number of people
with this condition is forecast to double by the year 2015, largely due to an
increase in the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is associated with
significant morbidity and early mortality. It also increases the risk of
blindness, renal failure and amputation. Much of this could be prevented by
provision of effective integrated care. It is essential to put in place a
service that can deliver high standards of care to people with diabetes now,
but can also cope with the anticipated increase in numbers.
